Shooting Reported at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Two People in Custody
Australian police confirmed an ongoing security operation at Bondi Beach after reports of gunshots and multiple injuries, urging the public to avoid the area.

Australian police are responding to a developing security incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach following reports of gunfire and injuries. Authorities said two people have been taken into custody as the operation continues, while residents and visitors were warned to stay away from the area.
Police Operation Ongoing
New South Wales (NSW) Police said officers were deployed after receiving reports of shots fired at the popular beach on Sunday. In a statement shared on social media, police confirmed that two individuals were in custody but stressed that the situation was still unfolding.
“Anyone at the scene should take shelter,” police said, calling on the public to avoid Bondi Beach and surrounding areas.
Reports of Injuries
Local media reported that multiple people were injured during the incident. Television networks Sky News and ABC broadcast footage showing several people lying on the ground as emergency services rushed to the scene.
A witness quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald said he saw “at least 10 people on the ground and blood everywhere.”
Event Linked to Hanukkah Celebration
Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, told Sky News that the shooting occurred during an event at the beach marking the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. He said one of his media advisers was wounded in the attack and described the incident as “horrific.”
Government Monitoring Situation
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the government was aware of “an active security situation in Bondi” and urged people in the area to follow instructions from NSW Police.
Security Concerns Revived
The incident has revived memories of past attacks in Sydney, including the Lindt Café siege nearly 11 years ago, when two hostages and the gunman were killed after a lengthy standoff.
Police have not yet released details about the suspects or the motive behind the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
