Darkest days loom in the history of Turkish Football, as Turkey Football Federation (TFF) bars Fenerbahce Istanbul from participating Champions League this season, after UEFA intervenes.

Fenerbahce Istanbul has been banned to play in this seasons Champions League competition, the club is subject to the ongoing match-fixing scandal and investigation, the Turkish Football Federation officialy announced. The unexpected announcement of the confirmation arrived just on the eve of the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday, which Fenerbahce Istanbul allegedly expected to be participating.

Fenerbahce’s exclusion from Champions League ocurred after Uefa stepped in, as the football’s governing body in Europe wrote a statement to the Turkish Football Federation on Tuesday to demand Fenerbahce’s withdrawal from European competition, threatening wider disciplinary action against the TFF should they fail to do so. The letter was forwarded accordingly to Fenerbahce Istanbul, who declined to withdraw.

The statement from UEFA was published on the TFF website reports :

“In the face of this development, on 24 August an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors [branch of UEFA] was held to discuss the threat of the Turkish Football Federation being exposed to severe disciplinary sanctions if Fenerbahce Istanbul would participate in the Uefa Champions League this season, and it was decided to bar Fenerbahce from participating,”

Fenerbahce : Chairman in prison, football team barred from Champions League

Fenerbahce’s reaction to this development was harsh, they claim to sue UEFA and TFF respectively. The turkish league winners of last season, have been withdrawn from the Champions League this season, with the draw for the group stages less than 24 hours away. Fenerbahce were crowned league champions last season, beating Trabzonspor to the Super Lig title with a dramatic 4-3 win at Sivasspor on the final day.

Although the final standings remain official despite the match fixing scandal, the club continues to suffer and be haunted in the aftermath of the investigation, as Fenerbahce president, Aziz Yildirim, is one of more than 30 people held in custody pending trial on match fixing scandal.

UEFA has spoken and executed on match fixing scandal in Turkey.

It is unclear how or if UEFA will choose a team to replace the Turkish champions, moreso the fate of other turkish clubs which are imlicated in the match fixing probe and playing already in European Football competitions, is also under question.Runner-ups Trabzonspor have already been eliminated in the Champions League qualifying rounds, playing on thursday the second leg of Europe League play-offs against Atletico Bilbao and Besiktas Istanbul likewise against Alaniya from Russia.

Fenerbahce’s kicking out of Champions League due to match fixing scandal investigation have found severe criticism in Turkey, UEFA’s punishment is found very unjust by most of the soccer pundits in the football-crazy country.
