Why the Queen wore dark green in honor of Prince Philip

It was quite noticeable: Queen Elizabeth II and other royals wore a dark green at the memorial service for Prince Philip. The color choice of the outfits has a specific reason.

Queen Elizabeth II honored her late husband Prince Philip at a memorial service on Tuesday. The ceremony for the Duke of Edinburgh, who died in April 2021 at the age of 99, took place in the presence of the Royal Family – including Prince Andrew – and numerous European nobles.

The 95-year-old monarch honored the man with whom she was married for 73 years, among other things by choosing the color of her outfit. Several in attendance including her daughter Princess Anne, daughter-in-law Duchess Camilla and invited guests such as Spain’s Queen Letizia of Spain also wore the special shade of green as you can see in our slideshow.

The green is the color of Prince Philip’s official wardrobe. Known as “Edinburgh Green”, it was used on staff uniforms and on private vehicles. A green Land Rover was also used to transport Prince Philip’s coffin at his funeral service in April 2021.

The brooch was a gift from Philip

Queen Elizabeth II also wore a brooch with recycled rubies. According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, Prince Philip gave it to her in 1966. The monarch wore it in the photos for the 70th wedding anniversary in 2017. According to the report, the Queen has also worn the piece of jewelery at various Christmas speeches.

Elizabeth II was joined by many members of the royal family. These include Prince William and Duchess Kate, who brought their eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte to honor their great-grandfather. Heir to the throne Prince Charles and his wife Camilla were also present.

The Queen was escorted to her seat by her disgraced son Prince Andrew – an unmistakable sign from the 95-year-old. Prince Edward, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Zara Philips and her family were also present. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, who have turned away from the royal family and live in the USA, were not there.
