Wisconsin: Shady Deal by U.S. Rightists

What is happening in the U.S. state of Wisconsin is being seen as the result of a shady deal by right wing forces to destroy the unions of public workers.

For more than seven days now, nearly 100,000 people have been protesting the legislation proposed by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walter and the Republican-dominated state congress.

The protests have been a reaction to something controversial: Scott is promoting a bill that would limit the power of public employees unions to discussing only wage-related issues, excluding others such as benefits and working conditions.

The bill would also set a limit on wage hikes based on the rate of inflation, and increase workers’ contributions for pension and health funds.

But the proposed legislation, supported by the conservative Tea Party, has triggered angry reactions likely to turn into one of the largest labor protest movements ever in the United States in recent decades, according to political analysts.

What has started in Winconsin could be the beginning of what they really need: a democratic uprising, political scientist Noam Chomsky said.

Other analysts consider that the future of the public employees’ power is at stake in Wisconsin, as well as their influence on the distribution of wealth nationwide.

Scott’s argument that his plan is necessary to balance state accounts has failed to convince his detractors, who say that an attempt is underway to destroy those unions.
