24-year old Mohammad Rafiq Bangroo had sustained critical head injuries in paramilitary soldiers beating during a protest demonstration at Safa-Kadal, some 5 kms from Srinagar, summer capital of Indian Kashmir on June 12. “He had sustained multiple head injuries and was operated upon by a team of doctors in leading hospital of Kashmir. The youth succumbed to injuries in the early hours of Sunday,” doctors, who attended on him, said.

When his body was brought to his native place, youth took to roads and staged massive anti-India demonstrations. Later, hundreds of people participated in his funeral prayers amidst chanting of pro-freedom, pro-Islamic and anti-India slogans. He was laid to rest at a local martyrs graveyard.

While they were returning, the mourners attempted to storm a paramilitary picket in Noorbagh area of city.

However, the soldiers deployed in the bunker fired from automatic weapons towards the mob, injuring five protestors. The injured were shifted to hospital, where critically injured Javaid Ahmad Malla succumbed to injuries.

“Our men observed maximum restraint. However, they had to open fire when the mob tried to set afire the bunker,” a paramilitary spokesman said.

Javaid was the third youth to be killed by police and paramilitary troopers in the summer capital in 10 days. Earlier, a teenager Tufail Ahmad was killed in police shelling on June 11.

Javaid’s death triggered massive anti-India protests across the summer capital with youth taking to roads and staging anti-India demonstrations. Chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans the protestors were demanding action against the paramilitary and police men involved in killing of youth. The youth fought pitched battles with police and paramilitary soldiers and the clashes were going on.

Meanwhile, the separatist leaders and groups have called for complete shutdown in Kashmir on June 21 (Monday) against the killing of two more youth in police and paramilitary soldiers’ action. “The Indian soldiers are committing systematic killing of youth in Kashmir,” they alleged.

After the killing of the youth, the authorities removed the police chief of Srinagar, Javed Riyaz Bedar. He has been replaced by Ashiq Bukhari.
