Curfew re-imposed in some areas in Indian Kashmir

Srinagar, July 10: The authorities re-imposed curfew in some parts of Indian Kashmir after clashes erupted between youth and policemen.

Authorities relaxed curfew on Friday evening for an indefinite period to facilitate the celebration of the holy Muslim festival of Shab-e-Meraj [ascension of Prophet (peace be upon heam) to heaven].

On Saturday morning, angry youth took to roads at Maisuma and some other places in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir and staged demonstration. Chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, the protestors were demanding action against the police and paramilitary soldiers involved in recent killing of youth.

At least 15 persons mostly teenagers have died in police and paramilitary soldiers firing and tear gas shells in Indian Kashmir since past fortnight.

The police and paramilitary soldiers lobbed tear smoke shells and resorted to heavy baton charge to disperse the protestors at Maisuma in heart of city centre. The youth retaliated by hurling bricks and stones towards them, leading to clashes. As the clashes intensified, authorities re-imposed curfew in the area and deployed additional police and paramilitary soldiers in the area to enforce curfew.

Similarly, people irrespective of age and sex took to roads at Kakapora, Pulwama in South Kashmir and staged demonstration. They clashed with the soldiers, who fired tear smoke shells and fired several rounds in air. The clashes continued for some time during which some protestors and policemen were injures. The clashes prompted authorities to-re-impose curfew in the area.

The authorities also re-imposed curfew in apple town Sopore, some 55 kms North of Srinagar after clashes between angry youth and protestors.

Most of the markets in Srinagar and other parts of Indian Kashmir remained closed. However, the grocers and vegetable shops were open and people were buying essential commodities and vegetables.

The curfew was imposed on Tuesday afternoon after four persons including a 25-year old woman were killed in police and paramilitary soldiers firing in Batamaloo and Maisuma areas of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, triggering massive anti-India demonstrations.

The authorities called in army to control the aner and prevent people from taking to roads and staging anti-India demonstrations. The authorities also imposed a media gag by denying mediamen new curfew passes after the old ones were declared null and void.
