In yet another sign of improvement in infrastructure in the country, first monorail will start in India’s financial hub Mumbai today.

New Delhi, Feb 1/Nationalturk – India will get its first monorail and the service will start in India’s financial capital Mumbai today.

The 8.9-kilometre long monorail service between Wadala and Chembur in Mumbai will become operational this forenoon.  However, it will be opened to the public on Sunday.

The monorail will  reduce the travel time between two cities by about half an hour, thus saving precious time of the commuters.

Project executed by Malaysian firm

The project has been executed by a consortium of engineering major Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) and Malaysian firm Scomi Engineering and owned and operated by MMRDA.

Initially, the mororail services will operate with four coaches having a combined carrying capacity of 2300 passengers at every 15 minutes.

All coaches of the monorail trains are air-conditioned and tickets are priced between Rs. 5 and Rs. 11 (Indian currency) with six stations on the way.

Construction of monorail began in 2009

The construction of the monorail began in 2009. The monorail will run as fast as 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph). However, average speed will be around 65 kilometres per hour (40 mph).

The Rs 3,000-crore project is being implemented in two phases. The first phase comprises 8.9 km long Wadala-Chembur while in the second phase the services will be extended to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in South Mumbai.

Officials said monorail can be the limbs to support the connectivity of the metro rail system.
