Myanmar (Burma) devastated by landslides and rain, 57 dead

State media in Myanmar (Burma) have confirmed that at least 57 people have been killed by floods and landslides caused by monsoon like downpours and torrential rain.

The area in Indochina (mainland Southeast Asia) has been under heavy rain for several days causing landslides and floods especially in areas with hills and mountains.

One of the worst hit areas was the in the country’s northwestern region near Bangladesh where many of the deaths occurred state media said on Friday.

Up to 200 people have fled the Myanma Ahlin area newspapers reported while winds backed with rain swept through many areas in the countries northwest damaging destroying or damaging homes and the erosion of sections of roads in the townships of Minbya, Ponnagyun and Kyaukta.

A bridge was also damaged by the rains and winds.

Officials at Myanmar fear that the death toll may rise as relief work started on Friday after the water started to recede.

Just in 2008, up to 140,000 people were killed or missing in Myanmar after Cyclone Nargis struck.

Bangledesh which is in the border of the country had also reported 56 people which had died due to landslides and monsoon like rains earlier in the week.

State media in Bangladesh had reported that many of the dead in one area were caught by landslides while in their sleep and that no warning had come by officials or weather experts.
