An Indian minister has revealed that 0.14 million people die in road accidents in India every year.
New Delhi, June 6/Nationalturk – At least 0.14 million people die in road accidents in India every year, India’s minister has revealed.
“About 0.50 million road accidents take place in India every year. In these accidents, about 0.14 million people are killed and about 0.50 million people injured,” India’s Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has said.
Expressing concern over such large number of accidents and road deaths in the country, he asked officials to visit all the accident prone sites to improve the provisions for road safety at such spots.
“The ministry is also considering to bring down the road traffic by developing inland waterways and by promoting coastal shipping,” he said.
India mulling new law to control road accidents
Gadkari said a new law is proposed to be prepared in about a month’s time incorporating various rules and laws to minimize road accidents and ensure safety of commuters and travellers.
“The new legislation will take into consideration the latest international standards after a study by the officials, who have been asked to undertake a study on the issue on a war-footing,” he said.
Asserting that said no one should be spared for violation of traffic rules whatever their status or rank in the society is, Gadkari said, “A system should be developed to confiscate the driving licenses of violators of road safety rules and it should be made difficult for them to obtain a driving license again.”
He said an element of fear has also to be brought to stop traffic rules violations.
