13 schoolchildren killed in crash between school bus and truck in South Africa’s Gauteng province

The collision happened in Vanderbijlpark at around 7am, leaving three students injured. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country is deeply saddened by the loss.

A tragic road accident in South Africa’s Gauteng province has claimed the lives of 13 schoolchildren after a school transport vehicle collided with a truck in the city of Vanderbijlpark early Tuesday morning. Police said three other students were injured in the crash, which occurred at around 7:00am local time.

Authorities reported that the school bus and the truck collided in Vanderbijlpark, with 13 students pronounced dead at the scene. Police added that three students were taken for medical treatment after sustaining injuries.

Ramaphosa: Families will receive psychosocial support

President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was deeply saddened by the deaths and pledged support for those affected. In a statement, he said psychosocial assistance would be provided to the families and friends of the victims and that measures would be taken to prevent similar tragedies.

“Children are the most precious assets of our nation,” Ramaphosa said, calling for stronger efforts to protect children in every aspect of school transportation — from enforcing traffic rules to ensuring the quality and safety of vehicles used to carry students
