At least 18 people were killed in a stampede near the Malabar Hill residence of deceased Shia Muslim sect spiritual leader in business capital of India.

Mumbai, Jan 18/Nationalturk – At least 18 people were killed in a stampede near the Malabar Hill residence of deceased Dawoodi Bohra (Shia Muslim sect) spiritual leader Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin in Mumbai, business capital of India.

The Dawoodi Bohra sect spiritual leader Burhanuddin had died yesterday after the cardiac arrest at the age of 102. His body was kept near his Malabir Hill residence in Mumbai for people to pay their last respects to him and his funeral will take place this forenoon.

Dawoodi Bohra is a sect of Shia Muslims.

‘Stampede took place at around 0130 hours’

“At around 0130 hours, a stampede took place as hundreds of mourners had assembled near Burhanuddin’s residence to pay last respects to him,” official said.

They said scores of people fell over each other, and most of the deaths were caused due to suffocation.

Officials said 18 people died in the stampede and 60 others suffered injuries. The injured have been admitted in various hospitals in Mumbai.

‘Inquiry will be conducted’

Officials said an inquiry has been launched to ascertain what exactly caused stampede.  “Preliminary investigations have revealed that stampede happened after the gates of Burhanuddin’s residence were closed”.

According to media reports, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has admitted lapses.

“Neither the police nor the organizers thought of the huge turnout of the people. Eighteen people have died and most deaths due to suffocation. When the gate was closed, there was suffocation,” he said”.
