Pope Leo XIV calls for unity and reconciliation during Istanbul service
During a major service in Istanbul, Pope Leo XIV urged Christian communities to strengthen mutual respect, rebuild trust and preserve the “bridges of unity” that connect people across cultures.

Visiting Turkey as part of his regional tour, Vatican Head of State Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message of dialogue and peace at a service held in Istanbul’s Volkswagen Arena. Addressing Christian congregations and invited guests, the Pope drew symbolic inspiration from the three bridges that span the Bosphorus, highlighting their reminder of how human ties must be protected and nurtured.
Bridges as symbols of shared commitment
Pope Leo XIV said the Bosphorus bridges serve as a vivid reminder that unity requires continuous dedication. Just like the physical structures linking two continents, he noted, the foundations of human connection must be maintained with care and attention so they do not weaken over time.
Breaking down barriers of mistrust
Emphasizing cooperation among different Christian traditions, the Pope called for dismantling walls of prejudice and fostering genuine understanding. He stressed that walking together, appreciating shared values and strengthening dialogue can offer a “powerful message of hope” in an era of global uncertainty.
A full day of interfaith engagements ahead
The Pope’s program in Istanbul will continue tomorrow with a prayer visit at the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral, followed by a liturgical service at the Aya Yorgi Church. Later in the day, he is set to participate in a joint blessing ceremony involving several Christian denominations.
Next stop: Beirut
After completing his engagements in Turkey, Pope Leo XIV will continue his regional journey with a visit to Beirut, where additional meetings and services are scheduled.
