Pakistan military on Monday launched ground offensive against terrorists in North Waziristan, killing at least 15 terrorists.

Islamabad, June 30/Nationalturk – After pounding terrorist positions, hideouts and safe havens from jet fighters and helicopter gunships, Pakistan military on Monday launched ground offensive against terrorists in North Waziristan, killing at least 15 terrorists.

Pakistan jet fighters and helicopter gunships have been pounding terrorist positions and safe havens in North Waziristan since June 15 when Pakistan military launched operation codenamed Zarbe Azb against local and foreign terrorists in the lawless tribal agency.

“At least 15 militants were killed today in the ground offensive launched by Pakistan Army in and around the Miramshah area of North Waziristan tribal region,” Pakistan army spokesman said.

He said  network of tunnels and a factory manufacturing improvised explosive device and bombs were also discovered by security forces.

“Three soldiers were wounded in an exchange of fire between militants,” the spokesman said.

‘Army commandos conducting house to house searches’

He said army’s infantry troops and Special Services Group (SSG) were conducting door-to-door searches in Miramshah town to ensure that no terrorists are hiding in the empty houses as most population from the tribal agency has been evacuated.

“Integrated fire of artillery, tanks and other heavy weapons is being carried out on terrorist concentrations in Mirali and other areas. Effective cordon is in place at other areas housing terrorists,” the spokesman said.

He said since June 15, when the operation was launched in North Waziristan, 376 terrorists have been killed by the security forces. “19 other terrorist have surrendered before the authorities,” he said adding so far 61 terrorist hideouts had been destroyed.

The spokesman said 17 soldiers have died during the ongoing operation.

Barring few religious parties, political parties in Pakistan have been backing military operation against the terrorists.

North Waziristan had turned out to be safe haven for the terrorists and almost all attacks carried out in Pakistan had been planned from the agency.
