The Afghan Taliban is mulling launch of political party to find a political solution to over a decade-long conflict in Afghanistan.

Islamabad, March 4/Nationalturk – In what could be termed as a major breakthrough in efforts to restore peace in strife-torn Afghanistan, the Taliban is mulling launch of political party to find a political solution to over a decade-long conflict in Afghanistan.

“We must launch a political movement to achieve the goals for which we have made so many sacrifices,” Mullah Agha Jan Mutasim, former head of Taliban Political Commission and a close confidant of militia’s elusive leader Mullah Omar told Pakistan’s newspaper, Express Tribune.

Mullah Mutasim was a minister in the Taliban regime before it was toppled by the United States and its allies in 2001. He had survived an assassination attempt in Karachi in 2010, and now lives in Turkey.

He said the Taliban leaders, whose names have been removed from UN black list, will play an important role in the political process. Several top Taliban commanders have been released from jails in Pakistan after request from Afghanistan government and US.

We’re awaiting for conductive atmosphere

“We are waiting for conducive conditions in the country to make a formal announcement,” Mutasim said when asked about possible launch of their political party.

On talks with Afghanistan government or United States, he said, “The Taliban spokesman has make it clear time and again that Taliban would not talk to the administration of President Karzai who, is a puppet and that the real power-wielder is the United States.”

Mutasim was concerned about possible civil war in the country after 2014 withdrawal of US and allies troops from Afghanistan. “This concern deepens when one considers possible interventions in Afghanistan by greedy neighbours and other regional powers,” he added.
