A court Tuesday found four of the six men  guilty of rape and murder of 23-year-old girl in December last year and convicted them. The sentences will be awarded to them tomorrow.

New Delhi, Sept 10/Nationalturk-: In a significant judgement, a fast track court has found four of the six men  guilty of rape and murder of 23-year-old girl in December last year and convicted them. However, the sentences will be awarded to them by the court tomorrow.

The 23-year-old physiotherapist was gang raped and brutally assaulted by six men including driver in a moving passenger bus in New Delhi (Indian capital) on December 16.  After the brutal gang rape and assault, the victim was thrown on the road in a bad condition.

She was provided best available treatment by doctors in India and was even rushed to Singapore for specialized treatment.  However, she died in Singapore hospital 13 days  after being brutally gang raped.

Police arrested all the six people, one of whom turned out to be a minor and another committed suicide in the custody later. The brutal gang rape outraged India with people across the country taking to roads and staging demonstrations. There were calls that the rapists should be awarded death penalty and hanged publicly so that such incidents don’t recur.

The fast track court here convicted the four — Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan and Mukesh  — by relying on the victim’s dying declaration and forensic evidence.

Court will award sentence tomorrow

“The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment tomorrow,” defence counsel said.

He said the court has convicted the four for 13 offences including gang-rape, unnatural offence, murder, dacoity, conspiracy, kidnapping and destruction of evidence.

Earlier, juvenile board had awarded three years imprisonment to 5th rapist, who was 17 when the girl was raped.

The brutal gang rape and murder case in Indian capital and subsequent protests forced Indian government to bring in tougher anti-rape law and the judiciary is currently hearing a petition seeking to review the term ‘juvenile’ and lower the age bar to be treated as a juvenile.

The new laws brought in by the government prescribe death penalty in cases where the rape victim dies or is left in a vegetative state.  The laws also prescribed penalties for stalking, groping, voyeurism and acid attacks.

Rapists should be hanged

“The verdict has given us some hope,” said mother of the 23-year-old girl said.

She said the family hopes the sentencing tomorrow will be a historic decision. “We hope it will put fear in the minds of those intending to commit such a crime”.

“I can never forget how she wept in hospital and said ‘they beat me so badly,'” the victim’s mother had said earlier.

The parents of the victim girl demanded death sentence to the rapists. “These men should be hanged till death because they don’t deserve to live in our society. If they are not sentenced to death then it’s a matter of shame for the entire country,” they said.
