After years of the crisis: Lufthansa flies again profit

The Lufthansa Group rewritten black after massive losses in pandemic. The recovery in tourism has also contributed to this. The numerous failures and delays are expensive for the airline.

Lufthansa has made a clear profit again after two years of loss during the Corona crisis. The net profit was 791 million euros, after a loss of almost 2.2 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected an average of 875 million euros, as the group announced today.

The strong demand for flights from travelers and in the air freight, the Airline 2022 with 32.8 billion euros made almost twice as high as the previous year. “Lufthansa is back. In just one year we have succeeded in a financial turnaround that was never previously achieved,” said Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr.

Passenger numbers doubled compared to 2021

In the past year, the group’s airlines promoted a total of around 102 million passengers and thus more than twice as many as in the second Corona year 2021.

Nevertheless, the group’s passenger airlines remained surgically in the red with 300 million euros, since the profits of the second half of the year were unable to compensate for the losses from the pande-defined first half of the year. There were also high costs of 555 million euros to compensate for flight cancellations and delays in summer, as was the case in aviation due to lack of personnel.

Profits also expected in the current year

CEO Spohr also wants to “clearly” drive up the adjusted operational profit in the current year. At the freight daughter Lufthansa Cargo, the largest source of profit during the Corona crisis, sales and result should go back after a special boar.

The passenger airlines’ capacity offer is to be increased to 85 to 90 percent – from 72 percent last year. “In 2023, the demand for flight trips is unbroken,” said Spohr. The ticket prices should continue to be around a fifth above the pre -crisis level.
