Cyber attacks have become more likely and more dangerous

The probability of cyber attacks on critical infrastructures has increased significantly as a result of the Ukraine war. The danger of attacks from the network also increases.

Cyber attacks in Germany have become more likely due to the war in Ukraine. As reported by the State Ministry of the Interior of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the overall risk of attacks from the Internet has increased. In Schwerin, the safety instructions from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution confirm this view:

“The risk that German positions will also become targets remains high,” said a statement on the security situation in March, which explicitly referred to the war in Ukraine.

The wind turbine manufacturer Nordex – which operates a factory near Rostock – was the victim of a cyber attack in early April. The company gave little information on the matter, but said:

“Purely as a precaution, the IT systems of several business areas at various locations have been switched off,” so it is a major incident. External experts are also involved in remedying the problem.

German high-value targets particularly endangered

On the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the KA-SAT satellite network of the US operator Viasat had also been attacked by hackers, which also led to failures in the remote maintenance of wind turbines in Germany. A direct connection to an attack by Russia is not known in either of the two incidents.

In a Spiegel report at the beginning of March, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) also expressed concern in a special situation report about the imminent danger of hacker attacks on high-value German targets. Among other things, these can affect critical infrastructures that are of strategic importance, such as the energy supply, municipal IT systems or hospitals.

“The Bundeswehr is also a high-value target for the players in the cyber and information space” and must expect complex and professional cyber attacks,” writes the Ministry of Defense on its website.

Cyber attacks are now part of everyday business

There had already been several attacks with malware in Germany at the end of 2021, including on Stadtwerke Wismar and the IT service provider in the state capital of Schwerin. According to the Ministry of the Interior, work is continuously being done at state level to improve IT security, and this can also be seen at municipal level.

According to the information, the state government is also cooperating with the other states and the federal government in this area. “Cyber attacks or IT attacks are now almost part of everyday business in information and communication technology,” it said.
