Deron Williams taking his basketball talents to Turkey with Besiktas Istanbul, where Allen Iverson also had played last season.

D-Will has agreed in principle to a contract with the club Besiktas to join the team for the upcoming season.

This is the same Turkish team that took a gamble on Allen Iverson during the 2010-11 season, but Williams is undoubtedly a much bigger star than Iverson and would instantly become the best player in Europe.

It’s a very interesting development, as Williams’ contract will allow him to return to the NBA whenever the lockout is resolved, but his departure sets the stage for some other bigger names to take a chance and play overseas.

Deron Williams Agrees to Play for Besiktas

The coach of Besiktas, Ergin Ataman, has confirmed to TalkBasket.net that they are negotiating with Williams as well as one other NBA player in Zaza Pachulia.

Ataman, head coach of Besiktas, said, specifically referring to Deron Williams: “We are in talks with Williams. At the moment he is a bigger star than Iverson and would be the best player in Europe. In addition we are also in negotiations with Zaza Pachulia. Both players are close to an agreement,” he informed.

NBA lockout : Are more players to follow D-Will

If the report is accurate, this marks a major turning point in the NBA lockout 2011 as there is no doubt that more players will follow suit and head to the international stage. Williams might have been the first name, but he almost certainly won’t be the last.

It’s very interesting that Williams is the first big name to sign overseas, because just like his trade to New Jersey during the regular season, almost nobody saw this one coming.

Clearly, D-Will doesn’t want to fall out of shape in the case of a prolonged lockout, and it’s awfully hard to blame him.

If Besiktas can nab Williams and Pachulia to add to their roster, the club will instantly become one of the most competitive in Turkey and in the European competition.
