Known for their rich nutritional value, blackberries are a healthy snack option. Yet, when consumed in excess, they may trigger a few temporary but bothersome effects. While these issues are not typically harmful, it’s helpful to be aware of them. Here are some potential side effects of eating too many blackberries:

Changes in urine color

Because of their strong natural pigments, blackberries can cause urine color to temporarily shift. Normally pale yellow, urine may take on a pink or reddish tint after eating large amounts of blackberries. This effect is harmless and usually fades quickly, but if it persists for several days, it could indicate another health concern.

High sugar content in canned blackberries

Fresh blackberries are naturally low in sugar, but canned versions often contain added syrups. This can drastically increase sugar intake per serving compared to fresh or frozen options. To avoid excess sugar, it’s best to choose blackberries packed in water or 100% juice—or stick with fresh fruit whenever possible.

Too much fiber

A cup of fresh blackberries provides around 8 grams of fiber. While fiber supports digestion, too much at once may cause discomfort such as bloating or gas, especially for people with sensitive digestive systems or those advised to follow a low-fiber diet.
