Explosions and Fire in Munich’s North: Police and Firefighters Launch Major Operation

Multiple explosions were reported in Munich’s Lerchenau district early Monday morning. Police urged residents to avoid the area as a large-scale operation with firefighters continues.

A tense morning unfolded in the northern part of Munich after explosions and gunfire were reportedly heard in the Lerchenau neighborhood. Police and fire crews rushed to the scene, where at least one vehicle was found completely burned out. Authorities cordoned off the area and warned of significant traffic disruptions.

Police warning: Avoid the area

Munich police issued a statement on social media platform X: “We are currently conducting an operation together with the fire department in the Lerchenau area. Please avoid the vicinity; major traffic disruptions are expected.”

According to Bild, the incident began with a fire in a single-family home. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions followed by gunshots. The outlet said one man was found dead and another person was discovered with gunshot wounds.

Early findings

Bild further reported that a man may have booby-trapped his parents’ house with explosives, set it on fire, and then taken his own life. Special units and bomb disposal experts were deployed and are continuing their inspections at the site.

“No danger to the public”

Police confirmed the operation began around 5 a.m. local time and emphasized that there is “no danger to the population.” Officials also stressed the incident has no connection to the ongoing Oktoberfest celebrations. As a precaution, the nearby Toni-Pfülf School was ordered closed for the duration of the operation.
