The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals at Penukonda, Hindupur and Anantapur, she added.

Rescue team struggle to pull out charred bodies from Hampi express ‘ wagons

Rescue teams are struggling to pull out bodies from the mangled bogies of the train. They are using metal cutters to get inside the bogies where passengers are stuck.

The DIG stated the rescue and relief operations are in full swing and most of the fire services of the district have been deployed at the train accident site.

Most of the Hampi express victims were labourers coming from Hubli and Hospet in Karnataka and were on their way to Bangalore.

‘ Prima facie it seems that the driver of Hampi Express overshot the signal,’ railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said in Delhi.

The Indian police have registered a case and both the driver and his assistant of the express train were injured and in hospital and not in a position to speak right now, Reddy stated.

Railway and local police along with fire fighting men soon brought the flames under control. Rescue as well as relief operations are on, officials said. The injured have been shifted to Penukonda, Hindupur and Anantapur hospitals.

Railway minister Mukul Roy, who was in Kolkata, has rushed to the site of the accident and ordered an inquiry into it.

30-year-old Ratnamma, who along 20 others boarded the train at Gooty (Andhra Pradesh), said she was rudely woken out of her sleep around 3.15am when the train stopped with a loud thud. Her husband fell from the upper berth on some children sleeping on the floor.

“I thought it was an earthquake. It is only when I saw other passengers jostling to get out, throwing their luggage outside and women wailing did I realize something was wrong.When we got down, it was a blood curdling sight,” she said.

One of the bogies was in flames, charred bodies were all around and bleeding and injured passengers including small children, were crying for help. “It is a sight I cannot forget”, she said, tears streaming down her face.

“It was simply unbearable and a gory sight to watch our fellow passengers burning in front us, while we just stood helpless” she said.

“We desperately wanted to help but it was searingly hot and smoke was coming out of the bogie, almost choking us. We could not muster up the courage to save our brothers and sisters”, she said.

For-25 year-old Munijayendra, a marketing executive with a private company in Hampi, his trip to visit his ailing father-in-law in Gutti will ‘ remain etched in his mind forever ‘.

‘ When the train stopped with a loud bang, I got down to see burning passengers crying for help. It is a sight I cannot get over. I will not be able to sleep for many days to come as their cries will be ringing in my ears. The worst part is we were helpless as the heat was just unbearable’. the survivor of Hampi Express train crash told the reporters.

Train crashes in India

The last major train accident in India occurred in July 2011 when a packed express train travelling from Kolkata to New Delhi derailed at high speed in the state of Uttar Pradesh, 69 people died in the dreadful accident.

India’s worst train rail crash took place in 1981 when a train plunged into a river in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, where over 800 people had died.
