Madonna throws a birthday party – and receives criticism
The idea of celebrating your 18th birthday with your mother is sheer horror for some teenagers. Not so for Madonna's son David Banda.
Madonna’s adopted son David Banda has come of age. After singer Harry Styles’ 17th birthday was celebrated last year at a concert, this time there was a lavish private celebration.
There were not only positive comments about this.
Madonna has now published a short video on Instagram in which it is clear that she was able to keep up with her son and his friends despite the age difference. In the clip, the “Queen of Pop” can be seen wearing glittering silver sunglasses. She paired it with a statement necklace and a black blazer that featured oversized thumbtacks. Her son wears a white suit with black details and a black bow tie. In a short sequence you can see how he is happy about a cake with a childhood picture and candles. The musician repeatedly appears dancing or toasting with her son and his friends.
She wrote that it was “impossible to believe” that she met him almost 18 years ago in an orphanage in Malawi. “You are becoming a truly remarkable human being! We are all so proud of you! You shine like the brightest star,” Madonna said.
The post received over 93,300 likes in 13 hours. The comment column speaks for itself: In addition to congratulatory messages, there are flame, heart and party emojis there. “No matter how old Madonna is, she parties like a 20-year-old,” said one follower. One user jokingly commented that he would like to adopt Madonna.
“Looks more like a promo party”
However, the video also caused criticism. “This looks more like a promotional party for Madonna than a party for David,” said one user. Another user went further with the comment “You look disgusting.” It is unclear whether the nasty remark refers to Madonna or to the party guests, some of whom were revealing.
It wouldn’t be the first time Madonna has faced hostility because of her extreme desire for beauty. She recently drew attention to herself through a breakdown. Shortly afterwards she appeared dancing on Instagram and polarized again with her wrinkle-free and almost flawless look.
In addition to her 18-year-old son, the singer has three other adopted children aged ten and sixteen. There are also her biological children Lourdes and Rocco John Ritchie.
