Mass jewelry shop raids in Baghdad, Iraq as 14 people killed

Baghdad, Iraq – Approximately a dozen armed men have raided several jewelry shops in Baghdad, Iraq, killing at least 14 people and leaving explosives in the shops which they raided.

The street which are lined with gold shops in the Bayaa district in the south-west of the Baghdad was also targeted in the past but not ate this extensive level where several shops were raided and so many people killed.

Reports are coming in that the majority of the dead and injured are shop owners and goldsmiths.

A witness who spoke to Reuters news agency said “I heard an explosion and then I saw four dead bodies on the ground close to the gold shops,”

An interior ministry official also confirmed that a number of bombs were defused by the authorities, on the street which is usually heavily guarded by security officers and locals.

Robberies are still very frequent in Baghdad and some other cities in the war ridden country which is trying to get back to normal.

There was a peak of violence during the March elections in the country but no majority was found.

Overall, the country’s violence has fallen since the 2006-2007 period which saw a peak in bombings, violence and theft.
