Nawaz elected Pakistan’s PM, says US drone attacks should end

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif was Wednesday elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan and after his election as PM, he said US drone attacks should end.

Islamabad, June 5/Nationalturk – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif was Wednesday elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan by securing 244 votes out of total 342 votes in country’s parliament (National Assembly). After his election has PM, he said the US drone attacks in his country should end.

Three politicians PML (N’s) Nawaz Sharif, PPP’s Makdhoom Amin Fahim and PTI’s Makhdoom Javed Hashmi contested for PM’s post in the parliament. PML-N holds a simple majority in the 342-member National Assembly.

Nawaz beat his competitors by receiving 244 votes while Hashmi received 31 votes and Amin Fahim got 42 votes.

Nawaz Sharif  became the first politician in Pakistan’ parliamentary history to make it to the office of prime minister for a third time.

After formally chosen by a vote in the National Assembly, Nawaz Sharif is set to take the oath from President Asif Ali Zardari at 1700 hours local time.

After being elected as Prime Minister, jubilant Nawaz Sharif while addressing the National Assembly vowed to fulfill the mandate entrusted upon him by the people of Pakistan.

He thanked the parliament members, who voted in today’s election and said the people’s verdict had shown that democracy was the only way forward.

Referring to US drone attacks in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Nawaz Sharif said the drone attacks should come to an end.

Pakistan’s previous government politicians, civilian society and religious leaders in Pakistan have been demanding an end to drone attacks. They said that civilian casualties caused by these drone attacks have led to increase in hate against America in Pakistan.

Pakistan government has repeatedly termed US drone attacks in its territory as violation of its sovereignty and integrity.

BACKGROUND

Nawaz Sharif began his political career in 1981 when he became Punjab Finance Minister. Iin 1985 he again became Chief Minister of the province and in 1990 he was elected as prime minister for the first time.

His first government was dismissed by then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. The Supreme Court did, however, reinstate Sharif’s government but pressure from the Army Chief in 1993, forced PM Nawaz Sharif to tender his resignation.

He was elected Prime Minister for a second time in 1997 securing a heavy mandate. However due to his differences with General Jehangir Karamat, Nawaz Sharif promoted a junior officer Parvez Musharraf to the post of Chief of Army Staff, and in October of 1999, that same Chief of Army Staff toppled the Sharif government, sending Nawaz Sharif first to Jail and then into exile.

After his dismissal in 1999, Nawaz Sharif was imprisoned first in Rawalpindi then shifted to Landhi Jail in Karachi, and then to the Attock Fort. He had been sentenced to life imprisonment as well as a 14 year sentence.

After mediation from rulers of friendly states, Nawaz Sharif and his family left Pakistan on the 10th of September 2000 for Saudi Arabia.

He returned to Pakistan on the 25th of November 2007, where his party became part of the hung parliament following the 2008 elections, forcing the President General Pervez Musharraf to resign from office in the face of impeachment proceedings.
