Pakistan PM constitutes panel to look restructure PIA

With an aim to increase proficiency and effectiveness of country’s flag carrier PIA, Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Friday constituted a four-member panel to look into its affairs.

Islamabad, June 14/Nationalturk – With Pakistan’s national flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in trouble due to depleted resources, Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Friday constituted a four-member panel to look into the affairs of country’s air carrier and suggest remedial measures.

An official said PM Nawaz Sharif chaired a high level meeting in capital (Islamabad) today to discuss the problems being faced by PIA. “The meeting discussed in detail the issues being confronted by the country’s flag carrier and the ways and means to address them”.

He said PM constituted a four-member panel for restructuring and reforming of PIA.  “Minister for Finance Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Advisor on Aviation Captain Shujaat Azeem, Shaukat Fayyaz Ahmed Tarin and Naveed Malik would be the members of the committee”.

Accumulative loss of PIA exceeded Rs 100 billion in December 2011

The accumulative loss of PIA had exceeded Rs 100 billion in December 2011 and its losses are increasing. The losses are hitting its functioning and operations.

PM Nawaz directed the committee members to come up with proposals and recommendations in the next meeting for addressing the problems faced by PIA in order to make it a viable entity.

Pakistan’s newspaper The Dawn said country’s beleaguered national flag-carrier PIA is notorious among Pakistanis for delays and cancellations. “Its planes have suffered a number of embarrassing technical problems this year”.

It has also been a subject of a case in the Supreme Court over alleged corruption and mismanagement.
