A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit the north coast of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. No tsunami warnings has been issued.
Sydney / NationalTurk – Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology corrected the powerful earthquake’s magnitude down to 6.8, which has struck off the coast of eastern Papua New Guinea.
The Papua New Guinea earthquake struck at a depth of 125.5 miles (202 km) and was centered 137 km north of Papua New Guinea’s second-largest city, Lae.

The United States Geological Survey initially measured the quake as magnitude 7 and said it was centred 440km north of PNG’s capital, Port Moresby, at a depth of 201km.
No tsunami alert was issued following the Papua New Guinea earthquake unlike the Indonesia earthquake with magnitude 7.8 hit the region last week.
