Turkey Football Scandal – Ex-International Fatih Akyel referred to court

Turkey Football scandal see’s ex-Turkey International, Fatih Akyel arrested under match fixing allegations.

After yesterdays huge operation by Turkish police which saw 46 people questioned under match fixing allegations, Fatih Akyel, ex-Turkish international has been referred to court by Fazıl Aslanalp the Turkish prosecutor along with another man named as Ali Rıza Gültekin and 2 others who’s names have not been released.

It is not yet known exactly why Fatih Akyel has been reffered to court but he is currently a footballer in the Turkish second division team tepecik belediyespor.

The 32-year-old ex-Turkish International with 64 caps from 1997 to 2004 was also part of the team which came third in the 2002 World cup in South Korea.

Akyel emerged from the Galatasaray youth program and took part in the legendary team that won the UEFA and Super cups in 2000. He has also played for many European clubs and also important domestic clubs such as Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor.

Fellow Turkish International and Galatasaray legend Arif Erdem, Erman Kılıç, Taner Gülleri and Kenan Hasagiç were all released after questioning.

Recep Öztürk, the goalkeeper of Turkish Super League side, Konyaspor who was playing for Gençlerbirliği last season has also been referred to court.

The scandal emerged after the Bochum match fixing investigation listed the Turkish Super League game between İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor(IBB) vs Gençlerbirliği in May 2009 as suspicious as unusual amounts of bets were placed on the game.
