Turkish Federation delays start of soccer season due to match fixing scandal

The start of the Turkish football league has been delayed by Turkey’s football federation (TFF) until Sept. 9 amid the match-fixing investigation scandal involving Turkey’s top clubs.

Turkish courts have already judged to jail 31 suspects, pending trial, including the president of champions Fenerbahce and the coach and deputy president of cup winners Besiktas on charges of match fixing in Turkey league and cup last season.

The match fixing scandal has plunged the start of the new turkish football season, previously planned to start on Aug. 5, into chaos. TFF stated earlier this month, that the start of turkish football league would not be hindered by the scandal, however TFF changed its opinion and stated the league start will not be earlier than end of august.

The final decision on delay was posted in a statement on TFF’s website, the federation informed it would meet with club chairmen today.
