Turkish Football Fed. deputy head questioned in match-fixing probe

Turkish Football Federation(TFF) Deputy Chairman Göksel Gümüsdag was detained on Saturday and released on Sunday as part of an ongoing match fixing investigation in Turkey after he was questioned by a state prosecutor.

Istanbul – NationalTurk – Turkish Police raided and searched Gümüsdag’s office, located in TFF headquarters in Istanbul, early on Saturday and detained the deputy chairman in the scandalous match fixing case and investigation. Then the official protocoll was followed and the deputy chairman underwent a medical check-up at a nearby hospital and was then taken to Istanbul’s Police Department for further questioning. Gümüsdag was released after he was sent to court on Sunday for a further questioning by the prosecutor overseeing the match- fixing probe.

Gümüsdag, the most important executive in Tff  was reportedly detained due to his suspected role in alleged fraud during an examination administered to those applying for a position as an official FIFA agent for football players during the administration of former TFF chairman Mahmut Özgener. The agent for footballers exam was later cancelled following suspicions that the exam questions had been stolen.

The detention comes amidst expectations that an indictment into the match-fixing claims was about to be submitted to a court. The match-fixing probe has been shaking the Turkish football world since July and an indictment has not yet been filed. The match-fixing investigation concerns claims that some club officials and footballers rigged games in the Spor Toto Super League as well as the Bank Asya League 1. Fenerbahce is expected to be relegated.Fenerbahçe Chairman Aziz Yıldırım being the highest-profile figure taken into custody in July among a total of 31 individuals, including agents, former footballers and club managers, were arrested in two waves of the probe.

The detained TFF chairman has connections with Tayyip Erdogan !

Göksel Gümüsdag has been seen as a critical figure in the case because he was the chairman of the Istanbul BB football club, two of whose players are jailed pending trial on allegations of match fixing probe. Gümüsdag is known for his close ties with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Apart from his post at the municipal-founded Istanbul BB club, he is married to Müge Gülbaran, a former secretary to the prime minister and the niece of Erdogan’s wife, Emine Erdogan. He is a politically active figure, who was  former candidate for mayor from Erdogan’s Justice and Minister Party (AKP) in an Istanbul municipality at a former elections.
