US President Obama signals new gun measures in coming days

Obama signals new gun measures in coming daysPresident Barack Obama said that he will begin introducing new executive actions on guns in the coming days that are ‘well within’ his legal authorities.

“Over the next several days, we’ll be rolling out these initiatives,” Obama said prior to meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch at the White House.

Lynch, along with other senior law enforcement officials, including FBI Director James Comey, was tasked with forming new actions that could help the curb the country’s gun violence.

“Although we have to be very clear that this is not gonna solve every violent crime in this country, it’s not gonna prevent every mass shooting, it’s not going to keep every gun out of the hands of a criminal, it will potentially save lives in this country and spare families the pain and the extraordinary loss that they’ve suffered as a consequence of a firearm being in the hands of the wrong people,” Obama said.

Obama said he is “confident that the recommendations that are being made by my team here are ones that are entirely consistent with the Second Amendment and people’s lawful right to bear arms.”

There were 53,000 firearms incidents in 2015 nationwide resulting in 13,312 deaths and around 27,000 injuries, according to gunviolencearchive.org, which uses a variety of sources to collect its data. By comparison, 52,000 incidents in 2014 resulted in a little less than 13,000 deaths and 23,000 injuries.

Conservative backlash against the proposed measures was swift.

Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said that Obama’s proposed actions are “a dangerous level of executive overreach”.

“He acts as if the right to bear arms is something to be tolerated, when in truth – as the Supreme Court reaffirmed in 2008 – it is fundamental,” the Speaker said in a statement. “The same goes for the Constitution and its limits on executive power.”

Republicans maintain that while the epidemic of gun violence is an issue that needs to be addressed, additional legal restrictions will do little to remedy the issue (Anadolu Agency).
