Beijing, March 14/Nationalturk – The chemical engineer-turned –politician Xi Jinping was Thursday elected as Chinese president replacing Hu Jintao.
Xi Jinping was elected a president this morning at the ongoing session of the 3000 strong National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature.
Xi Jinping, born in 1953, is also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
The plenary meeting of the first session of the 12th National People’s Congress (NPC) also elected Zhang Dejiang chairman of the NPC Standing Committee. Li Yuanchao was elected vice-president of the PRC.
Xi was appointed as party and military chief in November last.
Xi Jinping belongs to ethnic Han from Fuping, Shaanxi Province. He entered the workforce in January 1969 and joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in January 1974. He graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tsinghua University with a major in Marxist theory and ideological and political education, has an in-service postgraduate education and holds the degree of Doctor of Laws.
Xi Jinping replaces Hu, 70, who relinquished the presidency after serving the maximum two five-year terms.
According to political observers and commentators Xi will have to deal with an increasingly provocative North Korea and tensions with the United States, Japan and Southeast Asia.
