The embattled Pakistan’s former military ruler General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf has received support from ex-army officers of the country, who have warned the government against humiliating him.

Islamabad, April 23/Nationalturk – Pakistan’s former military ruler General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf, who is presently under detention and is facing trial in many cases, has received support from ex-army officers of the country, who have warned the government against humiliating him.

Pakistan newspaper, The Dawn, quoted senior defence analyst General (retired) Jamshed Ayaz as saying the military was closely monitoring the situation. “At least nine Corps Commanders, who are currently serving in army, were promoted during the Musharraf regime”.

He said Musharraf still enjoyed support within the army ranks. “The present army chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani should play a role to save Musharraf from such a humiliation. Otherwise his sympathisers may intervene to rescue the former military chief”.

Pakistan’s former army chief General (retd) Aslam Baig said army would not tolerate the developments after a certain level.

“Certain quarters were encouraging the lawyers against the former military chief. Otherwise they could not dare to humiliate the former army chief, who ruled the country for more than a decade,” he said.

Baig warned that the situation may turn dangerous turn if lawyers continued to humiliate the former military chief and tried to drag the institution into the courts.

The president of the ex-servicemen society General (retd) Faiz Ali Chishti said Musharraf has to face the court in case he had done something wrong but lawyers should not be allowed to treat him as a criminal.

“An accused, in the eye of law, remains innocent until or unless he is proved guilty. After proving the charge against the accused, courts announce its verdicts,” he said adding the lawyers’ role was only to assist the courts and not to give verdicts.

Chishti said in case of Musharraf, the lawyers were trying to take law into their own hands, which is unacceptable.

Musharraf’s supporters clash with lawyers

Another former army official Brigadier (retd) Mian Mohammad Mehmood, a representative of retired army officers association, said lawyers should show decency while Musharraf appears in the courts.

In a related development, the supporters of former military ruler Tuesday clashed with lawyers outside anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi. Both sides pelted stones on each other and chanted slogans against one other. Later, police and paramilitary forces intervened and resorted to mild baton charge to disperse the rival supporters.

Some persons were also detained by the police.
