7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia, leaves 1 dead
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Indonesia in the Molucca Sea, triggering panic across nearby islands. At least one person was killed and a tsunami warning was later lifted.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.4 struck off eastern Indonesia, shaking homes, sending residents into the streets and causing damage in several areas. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was centred about 126 kilometres northwest of Ternate, off North Maluku, and hit at a depth of 35 kilometres. The tremor was followed by a tsunami warning, which was later withdrawn.
One person killed
Initial reports said one person died after the earthquake. A 70-year-old woman in North Sulawesi was killed when a building collapsed and she was trapped under the rubble. Three other people were reported injured.
Tsunami warning later withdrawn
Authorities issued a tsunami alert after the quake, warning of possible wave activity in coastal areas. The warning was later lifted after further assessment.
Damage reported in nearby areas
The earthquake was felt strongly across surrounding islands and caused panic among residents. Local reports said buildings were damaged in several places, while authorities also warned that aftershocks could continue.
