A devastating crash occurred in Kentucky on Tuesday evening when a UPS cargo plane went down near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, sparking massive fires and thick plumes of smoke visible for miles.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called the incident “catastrophic” and urged residents to shelter in place as rescue and firefighting efforts continued through the night.
Rising death toll and multiple injuries
Governor Beshear later confirmed that the death toll had risen to at least seven, with more casualties expected. Three people were confirmed to be on board the aircraft, and 11 people were injured on the ground.
Fuel explosion intensified the blaze
Authorities stated that the plane was carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel at the time of the crash, impacting two nearby buildings and triggering a massive blaze. More than 100 firefighters were deployed to the scene to bring the fire under control.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg described it as “a tough night for the city,” extending condolences to the victims’ families and first responders.
