Cuba wins gold in 2010 Intercontinental Baseball Cup

By Hector Miranda, special correspondent Taichung, Chinese Taipei, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban team beat Netherlands 4-1 in the gold medal game and became the champion of the 2010 Intercontinental Baseball Cup which began in Oct 23 in this city.

An outstanding performance of starting right handed Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez secured the Cuban victory. Holland was second and Italy surprisingly got bronze after defeating Chinese Taipei 4-3.

Gonzalez allows 2 hits in 8 innings, one of them by leadoff Curt Smith in the fourth inning with one out.

From that moment until the eighth Gonzalez walked one runner and struck out six batters. Then the also right pitcher Yadiel Pedroso relieved him.

In the eighth Cuban right fielder Alexei Bell batted a home run and added 2 insurance runs to put the scoreboard 4-0.

Pedroso, including in All Stars Team, put himself in trouble by walking leadoff hitter and allowed three hits to the Dutch and their single run in the game in the ninth.

Netherlands could not score more runs because closer pitcher Jonder Martinez struck out Legito and Rombley to end the game.

This is the 11th title of the Cuban team in the 14th Intercontinental Cups.

Cuban victory was a remake of the 2006 Intercontinental Cup when the Caribbean power beat the Dutch in the final.
