5.3 earthquake in Chile causes panic

Santiago de Chile, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) A quake of 5.3 degrees in Richter scale struck Chilean regions of Valparaiso, O Higgins and Metropolitana, located in the central region.

The quake hit at 04:10 (local time) and its epicenter was located off the coast of Valparaiso, about 120 kilometers northwest of Santiago.

According to the Seismological Service of the University de Chile, three other quakes of about 3.7 and 4 in the Richter scale struck early in the morning in the northern and southern regions of Chile.

The National Emergency Office discarded victims and material damage as a result of the quakes.

Chile, considered to be a country with higher risk of quakes, was struck last February by a 8.8 quake which also provoked a tsunami and killed 500 people and effected 2 million.
