Delivery bottleneck: Porsche has to interrupt production in Leipzig

Because Porsche is suffering from delivery bottlenecks as a result of the Ukraine war, numerous employees are to be put on short-time work. Production will soon stop at BMW too.

Due to the war in Ukraine, German car manufacturers are suffering more and more from supply bottlenecks. Porsche is therefore now suspending the construction of cars at the Leipzig plant. The factory was forced to suspend production from Wednesday afternoon until the end of next week, a spokesman said.

The Macan and Panamera models are built at the Leipzig plant. Short-time work will be applied for for the 2,500 employees affected. In Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the Taycan and the 911 are built, production will continue this week, according to the announcement. »The further steps take place in an orderly process. In the coming days and weeks we will drive on sight and continuously reassess the situation.«

Wiring harnesses cannot be retrofitted
The Volkswagen subsidiary Porsche has so far obtained cable harnesses from western Ukraine. According to SPIEGEL information, other VW brands are also affected, including Audi, Seat and Škoda. The latter had to limit production due to the shortage.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are also struggling with the delivery bottlenecks. Because parts from Ukraine are missing, production in Dingolfing is to be stopped in the coming week, according to the Reuters news agency. A spokesman said: “We are in intensive talks with our suppliers.”

Ukraine is an important source of wire harnesses for the automotive industry. For example, the supplier Leoni operates two plants in the west of the country, and numerous other companies also produce cable harnesses there. These components cannot be retrofitted – unlike some semiconductors, for example, which – depending on the area of ​​application – can often also be installed at a later point in time.

The Porsche spokesman went on to say: “The Volkswagen Group views the situation in Ukraine with great concern and dismay.” It is hoped that hostilities will cease quickly and that diplomacy will return. »We are convinced that a sustainable solution to the conflict can only be found on the basis of international law.«
