The first of the nine-phase polling in India to elect 543 parliament members began Monday.

New Delhi, April 7/Nationalturk – The first of the nine-phase polling in India to elect 543 parliament members for lower house of parliament (Lok Sabha) began Monday with voting being held in six constituencies in two northeastern states – Assam and Tripura.

Polling for 543 parliamentary seats in India will be held in nine phases over the next 36 days and votes will be counted on May 16. At least 814 million voters are eligible to vote at 930,000 polling stations across the country.

The contest to wrest control of parliament and form new government is between Congress and rightwing party, BJP. According to opinion polls and surveys, rightwing BJP is far ahead then Congress and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who is accused of anti-Muslim riots in his home State of Gujarat of which he is Chief Minister, is expected to be new prime minister of India.

BJP’s PM candidate Modi overshadowed other issue

In fact Modi has completely overshadowed every other issue, even his party with and has been seeking vote in his name for what he says will ensure that India finally gets a strong and able government to tackle all the ills plaguing the country.

The Congress poll campaign is led by party Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Regional parties may play key role

Regional parties are likely to play a key role in formation or new government in India. In Southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu, two major parties AIADMK and DMK are facing the polls without having an alliance with either BJP or Congress.

In West Bengal, surveys have predicting a big win for the TMC led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, thirty-five per cent of the 64,41,634 voters exercised their franchise till noon Monday in five Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam.

Most of the early morning voters were women who said they wanted to cast their ballot before they began their housework for the day.

Reports said 41 percent of the 12,46,794 voters exercised their franchise till noon in Tripura West Lok Sabha Constituency.
