India is celebrating the 68th independence day today. India achieved independence from United Kingdom on August 15, 1947.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed people of India from historic Red Fort in Indian capital New Delhi after hoisting Indian flag. He delivered the speech without a bullet-proof shield at his podium. Over 10,000 people and officials were present on the occasion.

Wearing saffron turban, 63-year-old Indian PM called upon all citizens of the country to contribute to the cause of building national character.

“It  is an occasion for introspection for all, as to how his or her acts would weigh on the scale of national interest. Let all actions be in the national interest, and be seen as a contribution towards nation building,” PM said.

Greeting the people of India on Independence Day,  Modi, the leader of rightwing Hindu party BJP that won general elections in India in May, that he was addressing them not as “PM” but as “first servant”.
