Trump claims Starmer will resign: “He failed badly on immigration and energy”

U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will step down. In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that Starmer’s handling of immigration and energy policy would be behind his political downfall.

U.S. President Donald Trump has weighed in on the political future of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. As speculation grows in the UK over whether Starmer could soon announce a departure timeline, Trump claimed in a social media post that the British leader “will resign.” Downing Street did not issue a new response, instead pointing to Starmer’s latest statement that he remains focused on serving the country.

Trump: Starmer will resign

Trump made the claim in a post on Truth Social. “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom,” Trump wrote.

It remains unclear whether Trump’s remarks were based on direct knowledge or whether he was commenting on the political speculation surrounding Starmer.

Immigration and energy criticism

Trump also criticized Starmer’s record as leader of the UK’s centre-left Labour Party.

“He failed badly on two very important subjects – immigration and energy,” Trump wrote.

The U.S. president also added, “Open North Sea oil,” renewing his criticism of the UK government’s energy policy.

North Sea oil dispute

Trump has repeatedly urged the British government to reverse its freeze on new oil and gas exploration licenses in the North Sea.

He has also criticized the UK’s wind farms.

Although Starmer was once described as a leader capable of keeping Trump on-side, he has recently faced sharp criticism from the U.S. president, including over the war in Iran.

Downing Street points to Starmer’s latest statement

In response to Trump’s claim, a Downing Street spokesperson referred CNN to Starmer’s most recent statement.

“There’s more to do, and that’s what I’m focused on, what I was elected to do, which is to serve my country,” Starmer said on Friday.

Downing Street said there was nothing further to add at this stage.

Minister: Starmer is reflecting on political realities

British Business Secretary Peter Kyle told the BBC that Starmer was reflecting on “political realities” over the weekend.

Kyle said the prime minister would do “what is in the best interests of the country.”

UK media points to Monday

British media outlets are widely reporting that Starmer could stand down on Monday.

Reports also suggest support is moving behind Andy Burnham, the outgoing Manchester mayor who recently won a by-election.
