A police spokesman said suspected militants traveling in a vehicle lobbed a grenade towards police post near Palhalan Pattan, some 30 kms North of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir on Wednesday morning.
He said the grenade fell on the road near the police post but did not explode. The experts of bomb disposal squad were pressed into service and they neutralized the device after intense efforts.
The police and paramilitary soldiers launched a combing and search operation in the area but no arrests took place. The normalcy in the area was restored after an hour.
“The target of the grenade was a police post but fortunately the grenade did not explode,” a police officer said.
The North Kashmir has been very active on the militancy front. Scores of Indian army, police and paramilitary soldiers have been killed in the militant attack in the area since the onset of this year. Some militants were also killed in gunfights with Indian soldiers.
Today’s grenade attack came a day after police chief of Indian Kashmir Kuldip Khoda claimed that militancy related incidents are coming down and only 500 militants are active in the region.
