Shortly after Putin ordered the partial mobilization of the armed forces, a rush for plane tickets began. In the coming days there will be no more tickets from Moscow to the Turkish city of Istanbul. Direct flights from Moscow to the Armenian capital Yerevan are also largely fully booked. Both destinations that allow Russians to enter the country without a visa.

Various Russian media and Telegram channels, including “”, also reported that due to the rush for tickets, the website of Russian Railways has collapsed and is no longer responding. At least from Germany, however, the website could still be accessed without any problems.

Statistics from Google Trends also show a spike in searches for Aviasales, the most popular Russian website for buying flights. Some routes with intermediate stops, including those from Moscow to Tbilisi, were also unavailable. The cheapest flights from the capital to Dubai cost more than 300,000 rubles (about 5,000 euros) – about five times the average Russian monthly wage.

In a television speech on Wednesday morning, Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilization of the Russian armed forces. 300,000 reservists are to be drafted into the war against Ukraine.

In a further step, Russia plans to recognize the sham referendums in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. These will be held from September 23 to 27 in the Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Donetsk and Cherson and are intended to decide on the annexation of the occupied territories to the Russian Federation.
