Poland Presidential elections to be held on 20 June

The polish government has announced that new elections will be held in Poland on the 20th of June 2010 to succeed the late Lech Kaczynski, who tragically died in a plane crash while going to Russia.

A spokesman for acting President, Bronislaw Komorowski said “The new elections which will succeed honourable president Lech Kaczynski will be held on 20th June this year.”

Lech Kaczynski, his wife, senior members of the Polish Armed Forces and dozens of Poland’s senior politicians were amongst the 95 people who died on board the plane which crashed in Russia after hitting tree trunks in thick fog.

The crash has since been blamed on pilot error after but a full investigation is yet to be concluded.

The main candidates for the 20 June elections are expected to be, current acting president Bronislaw Komorowski and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brother of the late Lech Kaczynski.

The news of the elections was announced just days after Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were berried at Wawel Cathedral, where Polands past kings, poets and national heroes are berried.

Tens of thousands of mourners gathered in Krakow to show there respects and support while the late President and wife were carried to the cathedral to be placed in their final wresting spot.

According to early polls, Bronislaw Komorowski is leading the race to be elected as new President of Poland.
