Russia supplies Syria's attack helicopters - US accuses Moscow

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has imputed Russia of supplying the Syrian combat helicopters. The Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov firmly denied.

The US Secretary said yesterday : ‘ We are concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria, which will escalate the conflict quite dramatically. We believe that the situation is spiraling towards civil war and it’s now time for everyone in the international community to speak to Assad with a unified voice and insist that the violence stop. ‘ She added also that United States wants Moscow to stop furnishing Syria with all kinds of weapons. Washington and Russia traded accusations over arming fellows in Syrian conflict.

Vladimir Putin : Russia was not supplying arms to Syria against protesters

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov  summarized that Russia do not supply Syria or anyone else with things that Syrian army have used in civil war to fight against peaceful demonstrators. Washington has answered that it has only provided ‘ non-lethal ‘ aid, such as communications implement to the Syrian opposition.

The comments are the latest in an escalating war of words between Washington and Russia about Syria, where a fifteen-month rebellion has threatened  the government of President Bashar Assad, a longtime Russian ally. Since Soviet days in Russia, Syria was a major arms client for Moscow. Russia still maintains a maritime base in the Syrian port of Tartus, on the Mediterranean coast.

In the last few days, the UN has confirmed Syria’s use of combat helicopters against insurgent forces in the central Syrian province of Homs, an epicenter of the uprising.
