Turkish Pop Star Gulsen detained over comments put under house arrest

The famous pop star Gülşen has been released from pre-trial arrest on charges of “inciting hatred” over a comment she made about religious schools and has been put under house arrest.

Gülşen, who was arrested on charges of “inciting the people to hatred and enmity or humiliating” because of the words she said towards imam hatip high school students at her concert, was released under house arrest.

Evaluating the challenge, the high court ruled the release of the singer but warned that she could be arrested again if she failed to comply with the judicial control measures.

Gülşen Bayraktar Çolakoğlu, a 46-year-old known by her first name on stage, was detained at home in Istanbul and taken to court on Aug. 25 over a comment she made about religious schools in a video that has set social media abuzz.

A judge then sent her to jail pending an investigation into remarks she made on stage in April about “İmam Hatip” religious schools raising children to be Muslim preachers.

Gülşen statement from the US State Department: “We call on Turkey to respect freedom of expression.”

The US State Department made a statement about the singer Gülşen, who was arrested for her remarks about imam hatip followers, and said, “We call on Turkey to respect and guarantee freedom of expression.”

US “We urge Turkey to secure freedom of expression”

The United States of America, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made a statement about the singer Gülşen, who was arrested on charges of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility or humiliating” for her words against imam hatip followers.

“The United States is concerned about the forms of judicial harassment used to restrict freedom of expression in Turkey. We call on Turkey to respect and guarantee freedom of expression,” the ministry said in a statement.

Independent said about Gülşen: ‘Turkey’s Madonna has been arrested’

The Independent: The Independent, one of the most widely read newspapers in England, announced the arrest of Gülşen with the phrase “Turkey’s Madonna was arrested for mocking Erdoğan’s religious schools.” The Independent also pointed out that Gülşen’s open view on sexuality and her clothes have recently angered conservatives.

The Independent also featured the views of Kenan Behzat Sharpe, an academic focusing on pop culture and politics at the American Research Institute in Istanbul. Sharpe said, “Gülşen has been making music since the 90s. He has songs that everyone in his country knows.
