A minister in the current Zimbabwean coalition government, Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga, has embarked on a campaign of no-vote-no-sex to force men in Zimbabwe to come out in their numbers to register and vote massively to oust President Mugabe who has been president since 1987.
Mrs. Mushonga is the minister for Regional Integration and International Cooperation of Zimbabwe on the ticket of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Over the past couple of weeks, Mushonga has urged all women in Zimbabwe to deny men sex as a way to force them to register as voters and then to cast their actual votes which is slated for 31 July this year.
She noted that men are lazy and don’t want to be part of change and it’s always women who go and register to vote while men spend their time drinking beer and relaxing in their comfort zones.
Mrs. Mushonga told the Radio Netherlands Worldwide African Service that women tried their best to reason with men, but they were not listening and the only option left for them is to deny them what they like most.
“Our men have failed to play their role to bring about change in the country. It has always been women who have been going to register to vote and we, as women, have decided to take up the challenge to change the political status quo in Zimbabwe,” she said.
“We can fight as women, but we also need men on board because they are the missing link in the struggle for change,’’ She further added.
This is why they decided to hit them where it hurts most – in the bedroom – by denying them what they love most. And there would have to be proof: no voter registration slip, no sex.
Mrs. Mushonga, 49, became a widow in 2011 when her husband was shot by unknown gunmen in what is believed to be a robbery in their residence.
The Radio Netherlands Worldwide African Service has confirmed that Mushonga’s campaign of no-vote-no-sex in Zimbabwe has received widespread support among women who they interviewed.
This demand is not common in Africa but women in Liberia and Kenya have staged similar protest to press for their demand in a strange circumstance.
But President Mugabe at his campaign launch on 6 July predicted 90% victory for his Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Party (ZAN-PF).
President Robert Gabriel Mugabe and his Zimbabwean African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) has rule Zimbabwe since 1987 and he is still seeking re-election as president on the 31 July elections.
