The “very severe” Cyclone Hudhud that hit two Southern states of the India on Sunday, has caused death of 21 people.

New Delhi, Oct 14/Nationalturk – At least 21 people have been killed in India in “very severe” Cyclone Hudhud that hit two Southern states of the country.

Officials said Cyclone Hudhud  hit two Southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Odhisa on Sunday.

“21people have been killed and many others injured in the devastation caused by the cyclone Hudhud,” they said.

They said 16 of the 21 people were killed in  Andhra Pradesh port town of Visakhapatnam, which bore the maximum brunt of the Sunday storm.

“Visakhapatnam’s airport has been shut down for repairs. Its roof had blown off and the premises had been badly damaged in the cyclone. Flight operations are unlikely to resume in  a week,” officials said.

They said Visakhapatnam, which was practically torn down by the 200kmph windspeed, has lost 80% of its green cover.

The coastal towns of Andhra Pradesh and Odhisa are without electricity as cyclone has uprooted electricity poles and damaged infrastructure.

Over one million people evacuated

Over one million people have been evacuated by authorities from the coastal areas of the two Southern States. Many relief camps have been set up for the evacuated people.

Houses and residential properties have been extensively damaged and the officials have termed the situation as “complete devastation”.

People are facing inconvenience as they have no access to water and food supplies from the last three days. The markets are also closed.

Many areas in Visakhapatnam are facing chaotic situation as people crowd around trucks carrying relief material and are attempting to take as many essential supplies as possible.

PM to conduct aerial survey

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake an aerial survey of the cyclone affected areas today to assess the massive devastation caused by Cyclone Hudhud.

Prior to his visit, the PM tweeted yesterday, “Will visit Visakhapatnam tomorrow and take stock of the situation.”

“Have been constantly taking updates on Cyclone Hudhud,” he wrote.
