A career spanning four decades
Ali Larijani was born on June 3, 1957, in Najaf, Iraq. He completed his undergraduate studies in computer science at Sharif University of Technology and later earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in philosophy from the University of Tehran.
He began his career in 1981 at Iran’s Central News Unit and went on to serve in various positions across state institutions. In 1982, he joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and later held several deputy ministerial roles in different ministries.
Key roles in media and security
In the 1990s, Larijani moved into cultural and media roles, serving for nearly a decade as head of Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB. He later transitioned into the security sphere, becoming Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, where he oversaw Iran’s nuclear file and took part in related negotiations.
Parliament leadership and return to top office
Elected as a member of parliament from Qom, Larijani served three consecutive terms as speaker of parliament from 2008 to 2020. In 2025, he was reappointed as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
An influential political figure
Larijani remained an influential figure in Iranian politics for decades. While generally associated with the conservative camp, recent commentary suggested he had adopted a more moderate tone in later years. He was also known for his academic work in philosophy.
