Argentina: 20 million people temporarily without electricity

A power outage has brought life to a standstill in large parts of Argentina.

At times, up to 20 million people were without public electricity and – with record temperatures – without working air conditioning.

Millions of households lost electricity after a fire broke out on a high-voltage power line in Argentina. According to the authorities, several provinces were affected on Wednesday afternoon and evening. As the newspaper “La Nación” reported, citing the government of the South American country, around 20 million people were temporarily without electricity.

In Buenos Aires, too, there was a temporary power outage in some districts. Malfunctioning traffic lights caused chaos, subway stations could not be lit.

The cause was apparently a fire in a field

In addition, many of those affected suffered from the fact that they could not turn on their air conditioning because of the summer heat. Temperatures around 36 degrees Celsius prevailed in the country’s capital on Wednesday. According to meteorologists, the metropolis is currently experiencing the hottest summer in history.

According to initial findings, a fire in a field around 60 kilometers from Buenos Aires had also attacked the high-voltage lines there, which led to the first outages in the region. As a precaution, the Atucha I nuclear power plant, which is connected via the lines, and other power plants were shut down, resulting in bottlenecks across the country.
