BMW is launching a next generation of X1

The new model comes with three different engine concepts and a modified design.

All good things come in threes: according to this motto, BMW is now launching the next generation of the X1. When the competitor from cars like the Mercedes GLA or Audi Q2 goes on sale in autumn, it will be the third generation of the jacked-up entry-level model – for the first time with three different engine concepts: combustion engine, plug-in hybrid and pure electric drive.

The prices go up slightly with the generation change and, according to BMW, will start at 41,400 euros for the smallest petrol engine and 43,950 euros for the basic diesel. The plug-in hybrids start at 47,550 euros and BMW is asking at least 55,000 euros for the purely electric iX1.

Highlighted in the nomenclature as iX1 and immediately recognizable with attachments marked in blue, the E version uses a battery of almost 65 kWh. This feeds two electric motors with a total of 230 kW/313 hp and ensures a range of up to 438 kilometers. BMW limits the top speed to 180 km/h. While the Stromer is only announced shortly before the turn of the year, according to BMW, the X1 will start as a combustion engine in October.

All combustion engines with double clutch

Always equipped with a seven-stage double clutch, the X1 starts as the 18i with a 100 kW/136 hp three-cylinder petrol engine with front-wheel drive or as the 23i with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 160 kW/204 hp and all-wheel drive. The 110 kW/150 hp front-wheel drive 18d or the 155 kW/211 hp all-wheel-drive 23d are available as diesels, each with a displacement of two liters and four cylinders.

In November, in addition to the iX1, two plug-in hybrids will follow, each combining a three-cylinder petrol engine on the front axle with an electric motor in the rear and a 14.2 kWh battery for an electric range of almost 90 kilometers. As the 25e, the part-time electric vehicle has a system output of 180 kW/245 hp, while the 30e has 240 kW/326 hp on the vehicle registration document. There are also two other burners with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

A little more space and a digital cockpit

Not only the extended drive portfolio is new, but also the appearance: The X1 now has a much more angular body with an upright front and an almost square kidney. According to BMW, it is also growing in every dimension: the length has increased by five centimeters to 4.50 meters, the width has increased by two, the height by four and the wheelbase by two centimetres. Together with the sliding rear seat, this should improve the space, especially in the rear.

New times are also dawning on the inside: Just like in the big brother iX, the smallest off-road vehicle from Munich has a curved, free-standing digital cockpit on which a new operating system with more infotainment, better networking and clearer voice control runs.
